In the Frame with Irati Ayerza

Irati is a wife, a mother of two beautiful boys, Inhar and Udai and an award nominated photographer. She lives in the North of Spain, Basque country, between mountains and the sea, a photographers dream! With so much inspiration around her we are not surprised her passion for photography was reignited, after having her boys.

We talk to her about having the bravery to step out and start documenting her life through photography after many dormant years and the confidence to change direction, turning her hobby into a successful career.

Irati es esposa, madre de dos preciosos niños, Inhar y Udai, y una fotógrafa que ha estado nominada a algunos premios. Vive en el norte de España, en el País Vasco, entre las montañas y el mar Cantábrico, ¡un sueño para los fotógrafos! Con tanta inspiración a su alrededor, no nos sorprende que su pasión por la fotografía se reavivara después de tener a sus hijos.

Hablamos con ella sobre tener la valentía para salir y comenzar a documentar su vida a través de la fotografía después de muchos años de inactividad y la confianza para cambiar de dirección, convirtiendo su pasatiempo en una carrera exitosa.

Q - It's a pleasure to spend time and talk with you today Irati. We'd love to know, how would you describe yourself, beyond being a mother?

Es un placer pasarun tiempo y hablar contigo hoy, Irati ¿Cómo te describirías a ti misma, más allá de ser madre?

A - I am restless and a very emotional person, that would be the first thing that stands out about me. I studied journalism and emotional education because I have always liked to listen to what people have to say and tell their stories. Then, with motherhood I have evolved and I reinvented myself, now I am much more practical, but I am still just as intense.

Soy una persona inquieta y muy emotiva, eso sería lo primero que resaltaría de mi. Estudié periodismo y educación emocional porque siempre ha gustado escuchar lo que la gente tiene que decir y contar sus historias. Luego, con la maternidad he ido evolucionando y me he reinventando, ahora soy mucho más práctica, pero sigo siendo igual de intensa. 

Q - When did you begin your photography journey and how did it evolve from an interest to a profession.

¿Cuándo comenzó tu viaje en la fotografía y cómo evolucionó de ser un hobbie a ser una profesión?

A - Since I was little I liked to go through photographs in our family album and to mess around with my father's cameras... Then when I went to university, I had the opportunity to study in Denmark for a year, where I learnt a lot about the use of television cameras, framings and how to capture the stories I wanted to tell in images. But it was when my second child was born that I started capturing moments and emotions with my camera. First only with a mobile, and two and a half years ago I bought my first reflex. Everything I have learned has been based on online courses and practicing a lot. I'm still evolving and looking for new things, as I said, I'm very restless. More recently, I am trying to take one more step and turn this hobby into something more professional.

 

Desde pequeña me ha gustado ver fotografías de mi álbum familiar, trastear con las cámaras de mi padre... Luego en la carrera, estuve un año estudiando en Dinamarca y pude aprender muchísimo a cerca del uso de las cámaras de televisión, los encuadres y sobre todo, cómo plasmar las historias que quería contar en imágenes. Pero no fue hasta que nació mi segundo hijo cuando empecé en serio a querer captar momentos y emociones con mi cámara. Primero sólo con el móvil, y hace dos años y medio me compré mi primera réflex. Todo lo que he aprendido ha sido a base de cursos online y a base de practicar mucho. Aún sigo evolucionando y buscando cosas nuevas, ya digo que soy muy inquieta. En los últimos meses, estoy intentando dar ese pasito más y que este hobby pueda convertirse en algo más profesional en mi vida.

 

Q - What type of photography would you like to be known for? Is child photography your focus?

¿Por qué tipo de fotografía te gustaría ser conocida? ¿Es la fotografía infantil principal objetivo?

A - I especially like documentary photography. Tell stories, capture emotions. Right now childhood is my focus because it is what surrounds me, what inspires me. Fashion photography also attracts me (especially children's), because I love seeing how clothes are transformed or how you can transmit the values ​​of a brand through an editorial, for example.

Sobre todo me gusta la fotografía documental. Contar historias, captar emociones. Ahora mismo la infancia es mi foco porque es lo que me rodea, lo que me inspira. La fotografía de moda también me atrae (sobre todo la infantil), porque me encanta ver cómo se transforma la ropa  o cómo puedes transmitir los valores de una marca a través de una editorial, por ejemplo.

 

Q - How has becoming a mother influenced your photography? Has it impacted the way you view and photograph the world?

¿Cómo te ha influido la maternidad en la fotografía? ¿Ha condicionado tu forma de ver y fotografiar el mundo?

A -Totally. Frist of all, I believe that today I would not be here if I had not been a mother and I would not have felt the need to capture the childhood of my children. But also, I think that motherhood has helped me to enhance that sensitivity, that clinical eye, that vision that is so important in photography.

Totalmente. Para empezar, creo que hoy no estaría aquí si no hubiera sido madre y no hubiera sentido la necesidad de captar la infancia de mis hijos. Pero además, creo que la maternidad me ha ayudado a potenciar esa sensibilidad, ese ojo clínico, esa visión que tan importante es en la fotografía.

Q - What emotions do you try to convey through your photography?

¿Qué emociones intentas transmitir a través de tu fotografía?

A - I try to capture the experiences of childhood: jumping in puddles, playing with a stick, crying or laughing, hugging with mommy / daddy, walking barefoot...

We live in a small town surrounded by mountains and very close to the beach, so we can enjoy nature a lot. Always, I try to capture the nature of each person I photograph, their way of being.

Intento captar las vivencias de la infancia: saltar en los charcos, jugar con un palo, llorar o reír, abrazarse con mami/papi, andar descalzos… Nosotros vivimos en un pueblo bastante pequeño rodeado de montañas y muy cerca de la playa, así que podemos disfrutar mucho de la naturaleza. Y sobre todo intento captar la naturaleza de cada una de las personas que fotografío, su manera de ser.

 

Q - What inspires you to reach out to brands you want to work with? Do these brands have similar qualities?
¿Qué te inspira para llegar a las marcas con las que quieres trabajar? ¿Estas marcas tienen cualidades similares?

A - Mainly I look for two things:
1) The aesthetics of the clothes: that the clothes inspire me, attract me as a mother and as a consumer. The design, the fabrics, the quality... 
2) The philosophy of the brand: I like brands that commit to causes and that they manufacture their clothes in a responsible way.
Not all the brands which I collaborate or I have collaborated with are similar, but I try to fulfill these characteristics.
 
Sobre todo busco dos cosas:
1) la estética de la ropa: que la ropa me inspire, me atraiga como madre y como consumidora. El diseño, los tejidos, las calidades...
2) la filosofía de la marca: me gusta que sean marcas comprometidas y que fabriquen sus ropas de manera responsable.
No todas las marcas con las que colaboro o he colaborado se parecen entre ellas, pero sí intento que cumplan estas características.

Q - You live in a climatically diverse region of Spain, that lends to great outdoor photography. Do you have any favourite backdrops you enjoy shooting?

Vives en una región de España tan diversa climáticamente, que se presta a una gran fotografía al aire libre. ¿Tienes algún telón de fondo favorito que te guste fotografíar?

A - We love the beach, either in summer or in winter. There children can play freely and we also love surfing.

Nos encanta la playa, ya sea en verano o en invierno. Ahí los niños pueden jugar líbremente y además nos encanta el surf. 

Q - What challenges, if any, have you experienced with photography and how have you overcome them?

¿Qué desafíos, si los hay, has experimentado con la fotografía y cómo los has superado?
A - The challenges are constant, because whenever I do a collaboration I want to meet their expectations, do a good job and produce photos that convey the idea I have in my head.

I vividly remember the first editorial I did, which besides several children there were animals and the light was constantly changing ... it was a little crazy but at the end of the session, one of the participating girls (it was her birthday) told me that it had been the best gift of all, and that fills you with pride.
I always try to be honest and accept that there are things that can go wrong, but that with desire, communication and perseverance everything can be fixed.

Los desafíos son constantes, ya que siempre que quiero hacer alguna nueva colaboración quiero cumplir con las expectativas, hacer un buen trabajo y conseguir fotos que transmitan la idea que yo tengo en la cabeza.
Sobre todo, recuerdo con mucha ilusión la primera editorial que hice en la que además de varios niños había animales, la luz era muy cambiante... fue un poco locura pero al finalizar la sesión, una de las niñas participantes, que era su cumpleaños, me dijo que había sido el mejor regalo de todos, y eso te llena de orgullo.

Siempre intento ser honesta y aceptar que hay que cosas que pueden salir mal, pero que con ganas, comunicación y constancia todo se puede arreglar.

Q - What are your main goals and aspirations?

¿Cuáles son tus principales metas y aspiraciones?

A - I especially want to enjoy photography and that these photos can be a memory for my children in the future. In the professional field, I go very slowly, I prefer not to rush, but of course I would like to dedicate myself professionally to this.

Sobre todo quierodisfrutar de la fotografía y que estas fotos puedan ser un recuerdo para mis hijos en el futuro. En el plano profesional, voy muy poco a poco, prefiero no precipitarme, pero claro que me gustaría poder dedicarme profesionalmente a esto.

 

Q - What tips would you give to a person who has an interest in photography and wants to make it their profession?
¿Qué consejos le darías a una persona que esté interesada en la fotografía y quiera hacerla su profesión?

A - First of all TO LIVE the photography. When you do one thing with emotion everything is different, that emotion is transmitted. Secondly, to practice a lot, to  see many photos and take lots of photos. Look for inspiration in other photographers and create a unique style that is recognizable.

En primer lugar que viva la fotografía. Cuando una cosa la haces con emoción todo es diferente, esa emoción se transmite. En segundo lugar, que practique mucho, que vea muchas fotos y que haga muchas fotos. Buscar inspiración en otros fotógrafos y crear un estilo propio que sea reconocible.

Q - Finally, give one pay it forward piece of advice. A pay it forward piece of advice is something that was told to you and it changed your mindset. Hopefully it can change someone else's too.

 

Por último, cuál sería ese consejo que te dieron y que dale a uno un adelanto de un conte marcó, que cambió tu forma de pensar.
 
A - More than a sentence or advice, I always have in mind that my parents taught me to respect. Respect for oneself and others in the personal or professional field. 

Más que una frase o un consejo, siempre tengo en mente que mis padres me educaron en el respeto. El respeto a uno mismo y a los demás. En el ámbito personal o profesional.
